Define one real task

Choose a specific question before the loan: can you document the pattern around a window, identify a warm area on a low-voltage board or compare sections of a radiator? A focused session is more useful than collecting unrelated colourful images.

Check that the camera can focus at the required distance and that you can recognise the target in the saved files. A phone attachment should be tried with the phone and case you actually intend to use.

Try the inconvenient parts too

Capture, export and reopen an image. Record a short video if that matters to your work. Test whether the connector obstructs your grip, whether a stand is necessary and whether the app can preserve the information you need.

Terence Eden's reviews illustrate why export and computer behaviour are part of ownership. A device can be pleasant to use for live viewing while creating problems later in the file workflow.

  • Take a thermal image and a matching visible photograph.
  • Record the device, software versions, distance and conditions.
  • Export an original file to your intended computer.
  • Check practical focus, handling and connector clearance.
  • Write down what remained uncertain after the session.

Do not make a building decision from a first impression

Earth Notes records a borrowed-camera home survey followed by professional investigation. The second survey found issues the author had missed. That is a reason to use a loan to ask better questions, not evidence that a first DIY image provides a complete diagnosis.

If a major repair, damp investigation or unfamiliar construction is involved, a professional survey may be more useful than buying a camera immediately. It brings interpretation and follow-up, not merely a different device.

Buy only if the repeatable use is clear

A loan should tell you which functions you repeatedly need and which limitations matter. Compare current UK purchase and hire terms, warranty, the complete setup and any analysis requirements.

Our research did not verify a current nationwide loan programme or live hire prices. Check local availability directly; do not infer that a historical borrowed-camera example remains an offer today.
